In the case of recycled grades, fiber manufacturers can use the tracer concentrate pellets earlier in the production process by adding them to the recycled polymer content (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate bottle flakes or shredded nylon fishing nets) prior to being extruded into pellets. For added convenience, they can be combined with color into a single concentrate.

With this technology, color is added during the production of the synthetic fiber, reducing the number of steps and, as a result, the amount of energy needed to add color. The colorant is in the form of concentrate pellets added to the polymer pellets during the extrusion and melting process.

The fine black powder is added at relatively high levels and creates only black-colored parts. Fiber adhesion can be improved by treating or coating the fibers and by adding coupling agents to the formula. Hematite can be used as a pigment, adding a gray metallic sparkle to a compound.
